Learning Labs and Media Centers

Numerous churches that serve impoverished urban areas are faced with the issues that the children living in these neighborhoods are being left out of the "computer revolution" simply because they do not have computers at home.

Over a quarter of the churches that establish learning labs or media centers, do so because their congregations want to either use these labs as outreach programs for their surrounding community, or as a tool for Christian education within their congregation. Numerous churches that serve impoverished urban areas are faced with the issues that the children living in these neighborhoods are being left out of the "computer revolution" simply because they do not have computers at home. For these children, church based learning Labs or media centers are their only chance to gain the computer skills they will need to survive in the digital world we live.

Another problem many churches and synagogues have discovered is that the lack of computer knowledge isn't only economical based but also generational. For this reason, many churches have established learning labs for their senior citizens as well as for their high school students. Many times, these church computer labs will to be occupied in the mornings by elderly individuals who want to learn how to e-mail their children and grandchildren and in the afternoons by youth groups, either playing Bible software games, or researching information for school work. In several instances, bounds are created between the youth and elderly as the youth serve as teachers to the senior citizens. While a church may be divided over worship issues especially along generational lines, countless congregations are discovering that through the quest for computer technology and knowledge their congregations
are bridging the generational divides.

Parishes and churches that operate parochial schools are especially working hard to create state of the art computer labs. Many even include computers in their library in order to serve both parish and school. The church learning lab or media center can be a place where young, old, parishioner, and student may all engaged in the quest for both knowledge and faith.
